Happy World Theater Day! We sat down with Josh Strickland, the original performer of Tarzan on Broadway, as he shared some valuable lessons for aspiring performers.

Josh shared that one of the most important lessons of his career was something that he learned in high school - always treat everyone with respect. There is a collaborative nature to a theater production, he emphasizes. "It's treating everybody's job as just as important as your own.” This sentiment highlights the essence of teamwork and underscores the fact that a successful performance is the result of collective effort, from the leads to the tech crew and everyone in between.

Josh's journey is also a testament to the profound impact of mentorship. He has a heartfelt gratitude for the teachers and mentors who guided him along the way, acknowledging, "Without teachers, I wouldn't be where I am." Josh shared that he still makes use of the foundational skills and lessons he learned from his teachers growing up in middle school and high school. This serves as a reminder of the pivotal role educators play in nurturing talent and instilling the skills and confidence needed for success.

Reflecting on his own experiences, Josh shared valuable advice for aspiring performers: "Never give up, never lose hope, never let others get in the way of your dream." His words resonate deeply with the challenges many students face on their journey to pursuing their passion for the performing arts. It's a reminder to embrace perseverance and self-belief, even in the face of adversity.

One of the highlights of Josh's career was portraying Tarzan, particularly in Germany. While originating the role on Broadway was a dream come true, revisiting it in Germany allowed him to expand his horizons and showcase his skills in a new cultural context. "It's just something that I'll never forget," Josh exclaimed, reflecting on the profound impact of the experience.

As we celebrate World Theater Day, allow your students to draw inspiration from Josh’s journey and continue to empower your students to dream big, work hard, and never lose sight of their potential to make a difference in the world through their art. Together, we can cultivate a vibrant community where passion, talent, and dedication flourish, enriching the world with the magic of theater.
